Born and raised in New York City, Ricky Powell is a legendary photographer who specialized in taking environmental portraits. He graduated with an AA in Liberal Arts from LaGuardia Community College and a B.S. in Physical Education from Hunter College. Ricky Powell initially rose to fame through his relationship with the Beastie Boys... He ultimately became well-known for his intimate photographs that have been featured in The New York Times, The New York Post, The Daily News, The Village Voice, TIME, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone, and more.

Powell’s photographs highlight the organic New Yorker. His photographs simultaneously convey a style of intimacy and detachment. Ricky provides a unique lens of photography as someone who understood people deeply, you can see how comfortable his subjects are around him allowing him to capture truly special moments. Powell plays with the relationship between the photographer and the photograph and believed it to be “a chemical connection of some sort”.
